flower district mornings in spring.

popping down to the flower district in the early hours, in the name of peonies, in spring -- for many years now, one of my most loved traditions in new york, in life. one must arrive early to claim the best bouquets. one must carry coffee, always. and this particular morning: an umbrella, too.

new york isn't so much a place as a million nooks and villages that, when strung together, are new york. and when it comes to new york -- to that jungle of 28th street that is the flower district -- i remain positively bewitched.
