charleston, part i.

we've just returned from a long weekend with my family in charleston and soaking up a little bit of that southern summer.

my family's got a lot of roots there—my ancestors were among the original settlers and my grandparents met and married there, setting up house on king street—and the city first stole my heart when i was just a little girl visiting throughout my childhood, then stole it all over again when i moved there for college. charleston is the first place i ever loved.

it's so dear to me, returning year after year, and this visit was especially sweet. all at once, i was able to show my love around my old city for the first time and be with my papa in person on father's day—something i'm not always able to do, living so far away. sharing a few days away together as a family, feasting on fluffy biscuits and grits, dreamy sunrises over the battery, and each other's company...yes, these days are idyllic to me.

oh, charleston. take me back....and soon.
